Hoover Dam

What I didn’t told you guys was that on the way to the Grand Canyon and on the way back from the Grand Canyon I made a short stop at the place where the American government hide their most important secret: a giant energy cube from outer space that can turn everyday machines into evil, murderous robots! The Hoover Dam!

p1010365We had to pass the Hoover Dam – once knows as Boulder Dam – on our way anyway, so why not stopping and take the opportunity for a short photo session. We parked the Dodge in the parking garage and started walking. It’s a short walk on both sides. On the south side, the huge drop off into the Dam and on the north side the big lake. When completed in 1936, it was both the world’s largest hydroelectric power generating station and the world’s largest concrete structure. Nowadays it’s the world’s 38th-largest hydroelectric generating station.

p1010374p1010374Besides the fact that this Dam is big and impressive to see, I like the fact that the Dam is also the border from Nevada to Arizona. Passing the Dam eastbound over the Colorado River turns the time 1 hour into the future and going back westbound gives you an extra hour.Nowadays everyone has to pass the Dam to cross the valley, but they are already building a huge bridge over the Hover Dam to reduce the traffic and letting the normal traffic to pass much faster. But if you are here, make sure to take the touristic way.

p1010365p1010365Oh and filming at Hoover Dam isn’t cheap

The dam charges a scouting fee of $1,000 per day. A four-hour film permit costs $2,500 plus expenses, while an eight-hour permit costs $5,000 plus expenses. Still photographers can expect to pay $1,000 per day plus expenses for a commercial shoot. In the case of “Transformers,” the production company shelled out about $110,000 to rent an entire parking lot for all its trucks and trailers and pay all the federal employees who had to be there with them at all times. That included security guards, guides and electricians. The shoot lasted about a week last summer and involved director Michael Bay and most of the cast, including veteran actors Jon Voight and John Turturro. (source)

So here are some photos of the Hoover Dam. Enjoy!
