What a beautiful country is Belize. We went from Belize City straight to Caye Caulker, a small peaceful island just in front of the second biggest reef in the world. Once you set foot on this island a huge sign on the road tells you `Go slow`! And that`s exactly what you have to do here. There is a Jamaican atmosphere going on here with people talking a sort of American slang. And smelling weed on every corner is totally normal. We checked in at hostel Tina`s Backpackers, just on the right side of the dock and right on the beach. Tina`s beach garden looks out on the ocean and has a small dock with hammocks on it. Just wonderful! Tina`s old two floor house is great. Many places to sit and relax and the free wifi reaches all the way to the water. What else do I need?
The island itself has many bars and restaurants with great seafood. The island is not overpriced, you really pay for what you get. A beer costs one US dollar, a good big breakfast will cost 5 US dollars. Of course there are places that will charge you more, you just need to know the good places.
The next day I took a full day tour to the reef for some snorkeling. EZ tours took us with a small sailboat to three different spots where we saw some amazing sea life! Turtle`s, nurse sharks, manatees (also known as sea cows), many fish and of course beautiful corals. Just unbelizable! Too bad I didn`t bought a underwater camera. Except for snorkeling, diving and some serious relaxing there is not much to do here on Caye Caulker. And during our stay here the bars were also pretty empty because of the low season. So the next day me and some people I met in Guatemala left Caye Caulker - and Belize - to headed north to my last country on my list: Mexico!
