It`s unbeleavable but true.. I was on the top of Huayna Potosi, 6088 meters above sea level! Wauw was an experience was that. Together with my Israelian friend Noam and our guide we reached the top arround six in the morning after a very hard 4 hour hike.
We left a day before by minibus to a refugio at 4800 meters. From there we got out special equipment to keep up warm on the top plus helping us keeping grip during the hike on the glacier. We had to carry 13 kg in total each. From the refugio it went up untill 5130 meter, Refugio Rock, our basecamp for the night. The walk up took only two and a half hours. From there we had a amazing view down the valley and up the Huayna Potosi mountain.
After a nice diner we went to bed because we had to get up VERY early.. at 1 am the alarm went off. We jumpt out of bed, got dressend, had a quick breakfast, and at exaclty 2 am we started walking up the mountain. Our grip-ons gave us perfect grip on the glacier. We walked slow, very slow, so we saved some energy to make it all the way to the top.
We walked exactly 4 hour! Totally exsausted we reached the 6088 meters, sat down, and enjoyed the beautiful sunrise about La Paz. Behind us we could see Lake Titicaca and all the huge mountains around La Paz. Man what an incredible experience standing on top of Huayna Potosi - 6088m.
After the sunrise it was time to descent.. back to the refugio at 5130 meters took us only 2 and a half hours. After a small rest we headed back down to the start and back to La Paz.
I hereby reached my goal passing 6000 meter sooner than I though - my intention was Arequipa, Peru. Would I do it again?? HELL NO!! Well… we will see in Arequipa :)
